Walking Tour through Alfama
Lisbon’s most iconic and beloved celebration takes place every June: the Popular Saints festival, with the highlight being June 13th, dedicated to the city’s patron saint, Saint Anthony of Lisbon.
Saudade Language School took its students on a guided tour through one of Lisbon’s most authentic and emblematic neighbourhoods: Alfama!
On June 12th, we met with our guide Daniela and our students at Saint Anthony’s Church, next to Lisbon Cathedral, and we had the special opportunity to witness the arrival of the Saint Anthony’s Brides at the Cathedral. The wedding ceremony of around 12 to 14 couples was about to take place simultaneously, thereby preserving one of Lisbon’s most cherished traditions.
We wandered through Alfama’s charming streets, discovered the stories, legends, and traditions behind this unique celebration, and experienced a true taste of Portuguese culture while feeling the genuine soul of Lisbon!
