Book Club #8 – Ensaio sobre a Lucidez

For the 8th session of our book club, we chose to talk about José Saramago.

Saramago is a controversial writer.
His writing evokes social intervention, political and religious criticism and condemnation of Portuguese society; topics covered by the omniscient voice of an ever-present narrator, showcasing absolute mastery of the Portuguese language.

Ensaio sobre a Lucidez (Essay on Lucidity) is the starting point of this adventure, a novel about the relationship between those who govern and those who choose to be governed.

In this month’s session, we entered the Saramago universe to read and discuss very current issues: freedom, power, and democracy. After all, where does obedience end and lucidity begin?
