Book Club #2: Angústia para o Jantar
In the 2nd session of our Book Club, we covered the work Angústia para o Jantar, from Luis de Sttau Monteiro.
This short play addresses social hypocrisy, conformism, and a form of oppression that transcends the political sphere, infiltrating domestic life and human relationships. The anguish arises from the inability to be authentic in a system that prioritizes appearance over truth.
This work is in tune with contemporary European drama, but filters its conflicts through the social and political reality of Portugal during the Estado Novo (New State) dictatorship.
