National Museum of Ancient Art
With our amazing guide leading the way, we explored some of the most important pieces of Portuguese history. One of the highlights was Portugal’s oldest known artwork—a stunning gold cross from the 12th century, dating back to the reign of the country’s second king!
We were also captivated by a 14th-century gold reliquary that once belonged to the Portuguese queen – Dona Leonor. This remarkable piece holds a thorn from Jesus Christ’s crown and a splinter from the cross where He was crucified. Designed as a miniature replica of an Italian chapel, it’s beautifully crafted in gold and decorated with precious stones.
Although the famous Panels of St. Vincent were under restoration during our visit, we got a rare behind-the-scenes look at them in the workshop—a unique experience!
